Guardalavac & Havana - Cuba 2009

Well Cuba was a bit of an outreach for us as our favourite spots are in Europe (I hope I’m not just speaking for myself there)

We took our first All Inclusive holiday here at Playa Pesquero (Place of the Fisherman loosely translated I think. The resort was starred a 4 though in Cuban terms the proprietors starred it 5. There were 5 ‘A La Carte’ restaurants on the site which you could use four of in a week. See the table below for ratings (coming soon)

The drinks were of a reasonable quality with the odd branded drink being available (Jamesons for example) and the staff were very friendly and helpful when help was needed

There was an organised ‘Noddy Train’ to the village of Guardalavaca, some 35 mins and 5 pesos each return. The village consisted of a few bars and a restaurant and I think a hotel or two but the beach was very lively with locals setting up for was promised to be a large and lively party. Unfortunately the ‘train’ returned to the resort at 13:00 so were unable to witness it. I forgot the main reason for the trip was to go to the ‘lovely market which actually consisted of 4 stalls selling momento’s (there were 4 or 5 stalls at the complex selling the same stuff) There was not much else within easy reach

The Havana trip was something else though. See panel below for exploits

Playa Pesquero - The Resort

Not what we expected of the ‘resort’, a large sprawling complex (never been to one before) which, once we became accustomed to it, was quite pleasant. A huge pool are (mostly shallow) gave ample room for relaxing and a long white sandy beach meant there was room for everybody

The staff were all pleasant and friendly and the tour operators were in attendance regularly

The restaurants were positioned all over the site and generally served acceptable food (most of the time) See below for my voting regime

As noted below all but one of the restaurants were open to the elements (consisting almost entirely of sun)  i.e. no windows and doors, just a floor, roof and some balustrading

Drinks were all in and some very palatable wine was provided by the bottle or glass as preferred

Havana -  A lively city with quite a reputation , Hemmingways favourite apparently. Two bars frequented by the man,. one famous for Mojito cocktails and the other for daiquiri’s

We visited La Floridita (La Florida inscribed in the facade above the door?) during our day out in the city during an overnight trip we took. The entertainment consisted of a very rushed first day in the city viewing the old parts and the night at the Tropicana to see the famous show and , The second day was equally rushed but we had a few hors in the new part to walk around and see the sights. The lunch venues were very reasonable (El Floridita the second day) with excellent food but with expensive drinks.

There are some quite run down areas of the city but there are renovation projects going on there. The more modern areas seem to be quite prosperous with bars, shops and rum and cigar factories being a must for the tourist. Though the airport seems to be the place recommended to buy these. 3 one litre bottles of rum (white, golden and dark) with  a t-shirt and the obligatory biscuits for presents for work came out at about £30
